other cost saving devices & ideas

roof insulation

Insulating your roof is a good idea as this keeps the heat out of your 'inner space' through summers, and helps contain the heat within during the winters. Heating rooms is a pleasure and you don't get that feeling that the heat is 'being wasted', as it maintains a lot longer, especially when you need and want it to.

underfloor insulation

By installing underfloor insulation you effectively 'contain' the heat in the right areas. Coupled with roof insulation, this will keep the temperatures in between the insulated area where you want them, and will also maintain these temperatures so that you don't need to 'boost' the areas with electrical or gas heating. Another green concept.

grey water system

This is also one of those 'greening' ideas that once installed will not only make you feel like a true citizen of a greener planet, but will certainly assist you in irrigating your garden, as well as allow for a veggie patch and ponds to be integrated into your overall garden.

Catch the water from your gutters on those rainy days, and feed this into a storage tank/s, then feed your gardening system and ponds.

solar for your garden lights

There are many of these devices out there, that you could get from the likes of Game & Makro, as well as from your local hardware supplier. These require no wiring as they are portable and self-sustaining.

solar for your pool water heating

This is a great way to extend your swimming hours, as now you can swim in the early evenings and nights, in lovely warm water. Solar power a water heating system to you pool and get more out of your investment.

skylights - solar driven

Purchase a solar garden light or two (with 9 LEDs) - not too expensive, and couple this up to an energy storage device and a skylight lens, drop two of them into your kitchen - where you need consistent light - and you never have to worry about this lighting again. This runs also with a day/night sensor switch.

THis is more a conveniency thing than anything else. Not a lot of savings here, just a smart nice-to-have good idea.

worm farm

That is right. Cultivate a worm farm. This is a simple three-tiered system of trays that allows you to feed earth worms form your throw-away veggies and fruits, and you get to use this in your own garden system too.
